Torcon Executive Profiles

Benedict J. Torcivia, Jr.
Co-President
Benedict J. Torcivia, Jr. and his brother Joseph Torcivia provide day-to-day executive leadership for Torcon. They share Principal-in-Charge responsibilities on projects, ensuring clients of direct access to the company’s top management. Ben and Joe have responsibility for client satisfaction with Torcon’s staff, performance and services.

Ben is a graduate of Lehigh University.

 

Joseph A. Torcivia
Co-President
Joseph Torcivia and his brother Benedict J. Torcivia, Jr. provide day-to-day executive leadership for Torcon. They share Principal-in-Charge responsibilities on projects, ensuring clients of direct access to the company’s top management. Joe and Ben have responsibility for client satisfaction with Torcon’s staff, performance and services.

Joe is a graduate of Lehigh University and also has a Juris Doctor from Seton Hall University.

 

Philip Fischer
CFO 
Philip Fischer joined Torcon in 1980 after more than a decade in private practice as an auditor.

He is a member of Torcon’s executive leadership team, which determines the company’s strategic direction. Philip is responsible for Torcon’s overall financial management, accounting staff and procedures and IT initiatives.

He is a graduate of Seton Hall University and a registered CPA.

 

Richard A. Estrin
Senior Vice President 
Richard Estrin is a 35-year construction industry veteran and a 27-year Torcon employee.

He joined the company as a project manager before becoming Torcon’s first director of engineering. He has also served as project executive, directed overall construction operations and managed the reorganization of Torcon’s technical services group.

Richard was most recently Project Director for American Airlines’ $900 million new terminal facilities project at JFK International Airport. He is currently project executive overseeing the construction of Princeton University's Whitman College and the new FAA air traffic control tower at LaGuardia Airport.

 

Frank Fossella
Senior Vice President 
Frank Fossella is a 31-year company employee and is responsible for all Torcon’s pharmaceutical projects, as well as the company’s operations in Puerto Rico.

He was Torcon’s project manager for Schering-Plough's $240-million Drug Discovery Facility, and has subsequently directed Torcon’s operations on numerous projects for Wyeth, Johnson & Johnson, Bristol-Myers Squibb, and Schering-Plough.

Frank  has overall responsibility for projects, from contract award through final closeout.

 

Dennis Schettino
Senior Vice President 
An 18-year Torcon employee, Dennis Schettino has more than 35 years of construction experience throughout the northeast.

His career includes extensive project management and development experience encompassing office, laboratory and commercial facilities, as well as buildings for academic and hospital clients.

Dennis serves as a project executive with overall responsibility for projects, from contract award through final closeout.

 

Steven G. Mauer
Vice President 
Steve Mauer is an 20-year Torcon employee with 30 years of industry experience.

Prior to joining Torcon, he worked on various field engineering projects with Morrison-Knudson, as well as in the company’s Boise headquarters. He earned his B.A. degree in Architecture from the University of New Mexico.

Steve is a member of Torcon’s executive leadership team and oversees various operations groups and business activities at the company.

 

Michael Armento
Vice President 
Michael Armento has more than 30 years of professional experience, including two decades as a senior-level manager within the Philadelphia construction industry. Appointed Vice President in 2005, Michael has company-wide responsibility for the Torcon’s preconstruction staff and services, which encompasses estimating, scheduling and purchasing. He also has primary responsible for Torcon’s growth and operations in Torcon’s Philadelphia office, including ensuring customer satisfaction.

 

Jeffrey R. Vincent, P.E.
Vice President 
Jeffrey Vincent has spent his entire 30-year career with Torcon. A graduate of Lehigh University and registered Professional Engineer, he has led Torcon’s estimating group for more than 20 years. He has coordinated technical reviews and estimates on literally hundreds of projects for Torcon encompassing multi-unit residential, healthcare, hotel, retail, commercial and corporate facilities. Jeffrey’s pharmaceutical experience is among the most extensive in the construction industry, encompassing many of the largest and most sophisticated labs and production facilities in the nation. 

 

Jose Jiminez
General Manager 
Jose Jimenez is General Manager of Torcon’s office in Puerto Rico, overseeing all staff and operations. His background combines outstanding academic achievement and practical experience on major projects throughout the island. He earned both his B.S. and M.S. degrees in civil engineering and was a member of the teaching faculty for civil and structural engineering courses.

Jose’s work experience includes estimating and project management, as well as a specialization in project controls, on a wide range of industrial and pharmaceutical facilities.

 

Steve Kessler, P.E.
General Manager – Torcon Management Services
Mr. Kessler has more than 25 years of engineering and project management experience, including 18 years with Torcon. He earned his B. S. degree in civil engineering from Lehigh and his MBA from Rutgers. Mr. Kessler is also a licensed Professional Engineer and has made presentations on construction technology and safety at industry conferences.

Mr. Kessler was a project manager and director of engineering with Torcon and now oversees operations for Torcon Management Services. This division within the broader Torcon organization focuses on delivering construction management, preconstruction and owner’s rep services to customers on projects with durations and intensity that do not demand full-time teams.

 

George Kourides
Director of Estimating
Mr. Kourides has more than 25 years experience as a member of Torcon’s estimating department. He has led Torcon’s estimating efforts on many of the company’s most significant and important projects, including corporate headquarters, educational buildings, R&D labs and highly complex process facilities. He also served as estimating manager for multi-project programs for several pharmaceutical clients and for all Torcon projects in Puerto Rico. Mr. Kourides oversees Torcon’s multi-disciplined estimating staff and has overall responsibility for budgeting and cost control.

 

Brian Makowski
Director of Engineering
Mr. Makowski is a career Torcon employee with experience on lab, commercial and office projects. He was Torcon’s lead engineer for two $100 million-plus pharmaceutical manufacturing plants, and more recently served as engineering manager for the company’s Puerto Rico operations. As Torcon’s director of engineering, Brian has responsibility for all project engineering functions; implementation and management of the company’s web-based project management system; and the development and implementation of project controls.

 

John DeFazio
Project Executive 
John DeFazio is a 26-year veteran of the Philadelphia construction industry. He has spent the past decade in senior management positions, initially with one of the region’s premier general contracting/construction managers, and later as an equity owner of the firm.

John has completed dozens of projects of all types and sizes, for clients that include retail, pharmaceutical, healthcare, higher education and corporations. With Torcon, he oversees construction operations in the Philadelphia region.

 

Michael Fader
Project Executive
Michael Fader joined Torcon in 1965—the same year the company began operations.

He has managed many of Torcon’s most significant projects, including three $125-million-plus research centers. His projects have earned a "Lab of the Year" designation from R&D Magazine, as well as multiple VPP Stars for safety from OSHA.

As a Torcon project executive, Michael directs project development, preconstruction and construction phase staff and services for client projects.

 

Scott Loureiro
Project Executive
Mr. Loureiro has more than 25 years experience in the construction industry, including corporate headquarters facilities and technical centers such as research and specialty labs, process installations, trading floors and recording studios. Over the past decade, Mr. Loureiro has focused on pharmaceutical client projects throughout the northeast and in Puerto Rico. He has been directly responsible for several of the largest, most significant cGMP production facilities and research labs built by Torcon’s key clients.

 

Douglas Phillips
Project Executive 
Douglas Phillips is a 40-year industry veteran with experience in all areas of construction, from trade work to executive management. He joined Torcon in 1981 as a project superintendent and ultimately became a project executive after several project management assignments. During his career, he has managed a wide range of office, hospital and high-tech projects. He has most recently provided comprehensive project development assistance and construction management services to clients that include Merck, UMDNJ and Princeton University. Douglas is currently overseeing the construction of a 450-bed replacement facility at Greystone Park Psychiatric Hospital.

 

Ted Reynolds
Project Executive 
Ted Reynolds has more than 30 years experience in the engineering, procurement and construction of major industrial projects with extensive involvement on process-related projects for the pharmaceutical and biotech industries. He has managed construction programs throughout the United States and in Canada and Puerto Rico, with costs in excess of $500 million. With Torcon, he has directed both pharmaceutical production and research projects for clients that include Wyeth, Bristol-Myers Squibb and Boehringer Ingelheim. 

 

Peter Gardner, P.E., LEED A.P.
Mr. Gardner has more than 27 years of experience in the design, construction and commissioning of technical facilities. He has focused on project assignments for a range of corporate, healthcare and academic client groups. He oversees Torcon's sustainability program including commissioning services.

He is actively involved with ASHRAE and several of its technical committees, and is author of the ASHRAE Handbook. He is also chair of the ISPE HVAC Community of Practice and is a chapter lead on the ISPE Quality Laboratory Baseline Engineering Guide and the HVAC Good Practice Guide currently in development. Mr. Gardner is a licensed professional engineer, a LEED Accredited Professional for the U.S. Green Building Council and a Green Advantage Certified Practitioner.

 

Steve Schwarz 
Director of Projects – Torcon Management Services
Mr. Schwarz has two decades of management and engineering experience with Torcon. After earning a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering at Lehigh University, he began his career in the helicopter design and manufacture industry. At Torcon, Mr. Schwarz’s diverse experience has ranged over a variety of field- and office-based assignments specializing in hospital and pharmaceutical laboratory projects. In 1999, he used this experience to contribute to the growing Preconstruction Services department in the role of Project Manager. As Director of Projects, he oversees conceptual estimates, detailed estimates, scheduling, value engineering, constructability design reviews and procurement services.

 

 

William H. Surgner 
William Surgner began his career more than 40 years ago in project management for a mechanical contracting firm working in the Philadelphia area. In his 23 years with Barclay White, the company grew to become one of Philadelphia’s most respected construction organizations, as well as one of the nation’s top 75 construction managers.

William is a key member of the management team leading Torcon’s Philadelphia operations office. He is involved in customer relations, project development and support, as well as marketing and sales.
