Schering-Plough Headquarters
Worldwide Headquarters—K-1
Kenilworth, New Jersey

Torcon and Schering-Plough have a relationship that spans more than a decade, 16 major projects and $600 million. Among the latest projects is K-1, Schering’s new worldwide headquarters, located at their Kenilworth, New Jersey, campus. The 163,000 square-foot, four-story modern office building includes a new underground parking structure and an attached dining area.

Designed by HLW International, K-1 easily accommodates 450 employees and allows senior executives to be located near Schering’s research and development functions.

The offices are located off the full-height atrium, which runs the length of the building and allows for circulation throughout the structure. The use of perimeter offices maximizes natural light within the facility, while a sense of openness is achieved with 14-foot floor-to-floor heights. Schering incorporated custom wall finishes throughout, from a limestone veneer requiring the talents of a custom craftsman to a specialized aluminum and glass curtain wall systems.

A link is provided to an adjacent building by a two-story glass bridge that doubles as an art gallery. To complement the existing campus structures, the exterior of the new worldwide headquarters was clad in limestone with granite accents.

Dining and service functions are contained in a wing built adjacent to K-1. Only one story in height, the service area is 14,000 square feet and has a full-service kitchen and dining area for employees. The dining area walls are constructed out of stone with metal accents; the west wall is lined with banquette with custom fabric wall coverings. The ceiling is open-trussed with architecturally treated wood and acoustical ceiling panels.

The underground parking structure provides K-1 and its adjacent building with an additional 197 parking spaces. The parking structure itself is only partially under the new headquarters, it extends out beyond the footprint of K-1 under a landscaped courtyard up to an adjacent three-story concrete frame building.
