Torcon was general contractor for a new $55 million mixed-use center that is the largest private venture in North Philadelphia’s history. The project encompasses the construction of separate residential and commercial buildings located directly adjacent to Temple University’s main campus. The complex represents a new direction in architecture and planning for Philadelphia by combining student housing and community-based commercial and entertainment venues.
The new development encompasses nearly two city blocks bound by Oxford Street, 15th Street and Broad Street. The 12-story, 278,000 sq. ft. residential building houses more than 800 Temple University students in quad-style dormitory rooms with a variety of cutting edge amenities and facilities. The building features a poured-in-place concrete structure with a prefabricated metal panel facade, punched windows and masonry features.
The separate 90,000 sq. ft., two story retail and entertainment building features a 32,000 sq. ft., seven-theater Loew’s movie complex, retail shops and restaurants. It is a steel-framed structure with a facade treatment of curtainwall, metal panels and masonry.
