Capital Improvements Program
Newark, New Jersey
The University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey has relied
on Torcon for more than a decade on a series of projects at the
University Hospital campus in Newark. Our initial contract provided
an expanded scope of services beyond traditional construction
management responsibilities, in which Torcon acted as an extension
of the university's facilities department and participated in
programming, design procurement and design management.
One of the first major improvements undertaken by UMDNJ and Torcon was the renovation of the emergency department and the Level 1 Trauma Center at University Hospital. The project was phased and segmented into seven critical areas, each with its own phases to avoid any loss of patient treatment space. As each phase was completed the area was recertified by the New Jersey Department of Health prior to the beginning of the next phase of work.
Torcon also completed an addition to the New Jersey Dental School at UMDNJ, providing 180 dental operatories, three multi-purpose auditoriums and learning spaces in a 97,000 square-foot, three-story building. The Dental School’s superstructure was designed for the future addition of two floors.
Torcon most recently completed the construction of new six-story, 180,000 square-foot ambulatory care and outpatient treatment center facility. The new medical facility is situated on the University Hospital site and incorporates an enclosed pedestrian bridge on the third-floor to the Hospital. Torcon also added an adjacent eight-level parking structure under a design/build contract.
