Boston Properties
Princeton University at 701 Carnegie Center West
Working with Boston Properties, Torcon recently completed a new Class A, build-to-suit office building for
Princeton University. Located on a 560-acre site along the Route 1 corridor, 701 Carnegie Center is part of
the Carnegie Center office park.
Boston Properties used architect Kling Stubbins to design the base office building. Princeton University, the
building’s sole tenant, hired KSS Architects to simultaneously provide interior design. Torcon managed
construction of both the building and interiors.
The building is a four-story, 120,000 sq. ft. facility with an ornamental metal exterior and insulated glass
windows. The design provides abundant light into the building’s interior through large windows and via a
two-story atrium lobby with a floating ceremonial staircase.
701 Carnegie Center is the new home for Princeton’s Office and Information Technology and the
University’s finance and treasury operations. The office design focuses on introducing light throughout the
spaces, while maintaining an appropriate level of privacy. The interior offices have three seven-foot opaque
walls plus two feet of glass wall on top. The fourth wall, opening to a walkway, is all glass.
Princeton’s space features 17 conference rooms, training rooms and a testing area consisting of back-toback
computers where internal clients can test their new programs on “clean” computers. There is a quiet
room, kitchens, a library and a “phone room” for personal calls. Consulting areas are also provided—spaces
between workstations equipped with rolling tables and chairs that can be assembled together for quick
meetings. The building also features a first floor cafeteria, a gym with lockers and showers, and an outdoor
patio area for seating.
About 300 staff members were relocated to the office. Previously, the departments’ offices were scattered
throughout the main campus.
The overall project is USGBC certified LEED Gold.
