Mercedes-Benz USA
Headquarters Cafeteria Renovation
Montvale, NJ
Torcon was construction manager for the fast-track renovation of Mercedes-Benz USA’s Headquarters
dining facility. All work was completed within the occupied building on an accelerated 19-week schedule to
meet the client’s needs.
Torcon’s work scope began with demolition of all interior construction including block partition walls in the
kitchen. The design called for a completely new layout, which required saw-cutting of the concrete slab to
relocate under-slab plumbing lines and floor drains. A 2” concrete floor topping was also added.
The project delivered a new kitchen, servery and dining facility that met Mercedes-Benz’s corporate design
standards. Torcon also added a full-featured conference room to the dining area, with a concealed partition
system to create two separate meeting rooms. To further expand dining options, an innovative glass
“garage” door system was installed to allow open access to the patio during periods of nice weather.
This facility is home to more than 700 Mercedes-Benz employees, including the U.S. executive staff.
Torcon’s construction operations were modified to address the client’s desire for a normal work
environment. Despite the aggressive schedule, all disruptive activities—those that produced dust, noise
and/or odors—were completed during off-hours. In fact, the project generally utilized 10-hour work shifts
plus 8 hours on Saturdays. An elaborate system of floor coverings and trash removal was also employed in
an effort to make the construction operations invisible to the Mercedes-Benz staff when they arrived for
work the next day.
