Construction Management

Torcon was the Construction Manager for the renovation and expansion of the three-story School of Science. The project primarily provides teaching and research labs, with additional classroom and office space. The new facilities make extensive use of glass, and focus on flexibility through movable lab and classroom components that adapt to diverse teaching and learning styles. Specialized spaces include a 150-seat auditorium, computer labs, herbarium, new teaching labs, and student/faculty research facilities for a variety of disciplines.

Torcon completed the project in distinct phases to allow full use of the existing school facilities throughout the construction. The initial phases included construction of a 24,000 sq. ft. addition, which linked Edison Hall and Howard Hall. The new two-story structure provides an expansive formal entrance and lobby, with a seminar room, labs and office suites for faculty and the Dean, and study rooms. Torcon simultaneously renovated all spaces on the first level of Edison, and completed a comprehensive upgrade of the building facade, which included structural improvements. The new spaces were available for University use at the start of the spring 2017 semester. Gut renovations of labs, offices and classrooms on the second and third floors followed.

Structural improvements included new columns within the building and exterior buttresses, as well as façade and roof upgrades. MEP system upgrades encompassed  electrical equipment; new boilers; new AHU; introduction of exhaust fans on the roof; a new emergency generator; replacement of the chiller; and new MEP distribution within the renovated spaces.
